I didn't take physics at high school (nor chemistry and, IIRC, I failed maths) so I didn't know what an intereference pattern is. Thank God for Google, I found this page and suddenly the science-y stuff I've learnt on my own in the intervening years spoke up:
"Ahem, remember the double slit thing where light is both a particle and a wave? Where the waves cross is an interference pattern. Dickhead."
Thank goodness I didn't end up looking stupid.
